Nestled among the trees on an island spit, Lake Murray lodge, the newest lodge in our portfolio, overlooks beautiful Lake Murray. The lodge has found its home in this very remote area and on the largest lake in Papua New Guinea. Island communities of stilted houses dot the water landscape of the lake. Dugout canoes are the primary mode of transportation and fishing is a major source of food to the local population. Lake Murray is the largest lake in Papua New Guinea. During the wet season it spreads to occupy an area of about 2000 square kilometers. It has a population of about 5,000 people scattered in small villages, both on tiny islands and coastal areas of the lake. Of interest, the lake also has had sightings of its own "Nessie", believed to be a relative of the Theropod dinosaur family. A Government Station on the opposite side of this island from the lodge was established in the pre-Independence area. A school and small hospital make this the population center of the surrounding area. An airstrip on the Station also provides air access to the area for small aircraft.
accommodation
Guests are accommodated in 12 individual cabin rooms overlooking the lake. They are furnished with king twin or double beds, ceiling fans, modern en-suite bathrooms, an elevated veranda and wonderful view of the lake. The Main Lodge building with a wraparound veranda houses a dining room, lounge, bar and reception. This veranda will be the place to enjoy exceptional sunsets over the water.
All of the buildings have made use of local sago woven matting and timber providing a natural setting to fit with the location.
In keeping with the eco-friendly philosophy, the entire lodge operation is powered with the latest technology in solar power. This provides 24 hour electricity with 240 volt power, a luxury in this remote location.
A large garden provides fresh vegetables and fruit on site. The kitchen staff cooks on a wood fired cookstove and outdoor grill for the daily catch and garden selections.
With a rich population of birds, fish and a unique culture, this lodge is an exceptional experience for travelers wanting to experience this remote PNG destination in comfort.
