The mountain

Madarao Mountain Resort

Mt. Madarao stands 1,382 metres tall with 30 separate trails and 15 lifts, in a unique bowl-shaped ski area. Previously host to Japan's first Freestyle Skiing Competition, 60% of the trails are ungroomed — plenty of chances for fresh powder tracks, since many Japanese skiers stick to the groomed runs. The double ski pass includes Tangram Ski Circus, with picturesque views of Lake Nojiri and Mt. Myoko, and day trips are easy to Nozawa Onsen and Myoko Kogen.
