Hike a Land That Time Forgot

Nine nights on foot — rainforest waterfalls, WWII sites, and the climb to Kolombangara’s crater.

A walking trip through Honiara, Munda, Gizo and Kolombangara. Rainforest waterfalls, over-water bungalows, WWII sites and village visits, finishing with the hike up to the crater of a dormant volcano. The conservation fee, a hiking guide each day and all meals are included on the Kolombangara leg.

Day by day

Day 1 — Honiara and Parangiju

Your driver collects you from Honiara International Airport and drives up into the mountains to Parangiju Mountain Lodge for the night. Spend the afternoon taking in the view over Honiara and the port below. Dinner is included.

Day 2 — Waterfalls, then Munda

After breakfast, a morning bushwalk to the nearby waterfalls — bring a camera. Your driver takes you to the domestic airport for the flight to Munda; take an aisle seat, the aerial views are worth it. A representative from Titiru Eco Lodge meets you and takes you an hour by boat to your over-water bungalow.

Days 3–4 — Titiru Eco Lodge

Two days at your own pace: swimming, snorkelling, fishing, visiting the village, or hiking Mt Rendova. If you are lucky you will hear the bamboo band play. All meals included.

Day 5 — Munda

A last morning at Titiru, then an hour by boat to Agnes Lodge in Munda. Explore the village, the markets and the Peter Joseph WWII Museum, or hire a driver for snorkelling and a look at the surrounding islands — Skull Island among them, and its head-hunting history.

Day 6 — Vona Vona Lagoon to Kolombangara

The local Rava boat takes you an hour and a half down the Vona Vona Lagoon to Gizo, past crystal water, deserted islands and local homes. Walk the Gizo markets and the main street, then an hour by boat to Kolombangara and the township of Ringgi, where you spend the night at Ringgi Guesthouse. Local dinner included.

Days 7–8 — Imbu Rano Lodge

After breakfast you travel up to the highlands in the back of a truck and base yourself at Imbu Rano Lodge — the starting point for hiking to the crater, along the river, or through the rainforest. The conservation fee, a hiking guide each day and all meals are included.

Day 9 — Home

Back down to Ringgi and by boat to Gizo airstrip, then the flight to Honiara and on to your international connection — or stay on in town. Ask us about adding two nights in Honiara at the Heritage Hotel, or WWII tours of the battlefields and monuments, including snorkelling a Japanese freighter off Banoge Beach.
